Wellbeing When Working from Home - Some Advice and Tips
Although the school day is a little over 6 hours long it is not appropriate that children are working for this length of time. Everyone, children and adults need to take regular breaks and depending on your child’s age their concentration span will only be able to cope with working in short bursts. Give them time to do an activity and then let them play.
If you are working from home too, please don’t expect your child to simply get on with the work that is set, especially younger children. When children are in class, they are constantly interacting with the adults and the other children. If they are now isolating, they still want that interaction – and you are the ones they want to supply it!
Don’t panic if you don’t feel that your child is learning. They almost certainly are, just not necessarily what you thought they should. They will pick up on the example you set, your work ethic, the things you are doing around the house and they will actually learn from the best teachers they could ever have – you – their parents & carers.
If your child is having to isolate we recommend that you do the following:
- If you are expected to work from home – explain to your employer that your child is with you and may need your support
- Check SeeSaw each school day in case new work has been set
- Encourage your child to complete the activities that have been set by carrying out an activity and then having a short break or play. We recommend that they start their activities at 9am and aim to work throughout the morning with breaks interspersed.
- If you can, check your child’s work with them as they do it. Give plenty of praise for completing work, especially if your child is proud of what they have done.
- Photograph the work and post it back to the teacher on SeeSaw.
- Check SeeSaw to see if the teacher has fed back.
Please note, the teachers will set, feedback on work completed and answer any further questions during school hours.
